What Is Blockchain Technology? A Simple Explanation
Blockchain gets described in so many complicated ways that it's easy to assume it must be complicated to understand. At its core, though, the idea is fairly simple.
The Basic Idea
A blockchain is a digital record-keeping system — a ledger — that's copied and maintained across a large network of computers instead of being stored in one central place. Every new transaction is grouped into a "block," which is then linked ("chained") to the previous block, creating a permanent, ordered history that's very difficult to alter after the fact.
Why "Decentralized" Matters
In a traditional system, a single bank or institution keeps the official record of who owns what. A blockchain removes that single point of control — instead, thousands of independent computers ("nodes") each hold a copy of the same record and must agree on any changes before they're accepted. This is what people mean when they say blockchain is "decentralized."
Why It's Hard to Cheat
Because every node holds a copy of the full history, and each new block is cryptographically linked to the one before it, altering an old transaction would require simultaneously changing that record on the vast majority of computers in the network — a practically impossible task for any established blockchain with enough participants.
Blockchain vs Cryptocurrency
These terms get used almost interchangeably, but they're not the same thing. Blockchain is the underlying technology — the ledger system. Cryptocurrency is one application built on top of that technology, used to represent and transfer value. Blockchains can also be used for things unrelated to currency, like tracking supply chains or verifying digital ownership.
Why It Was a Meaningful Innovation
Before blockchain, digital systems generally needed a trusted central authority to prevent something called "double-spending" — using the same digital money twice. Blockchain solved this problem without requiring a central authority, which is what made peer-to-peer digital currencies like Bitcoin possible in the first place.
